Fecal management systems are held in the rectal vault by a retention balloon. However, there are potential issues with this type of device, such as balloon expulsion; the potential for balloon overfill; and leakage requiring incontinence care.1 Also, rectal vault anatomy can vary between patients.1

Over inflation of the retention balloon can increase the chances of rectal pain, bleeding, ulcerations, and possible perforations.
