Prevent exposure with Convatec Diamonds™
What comes to mind when handling the collection bag on a fecal management system in use? Exposure. Afterall, a fecal management system is meant to safely divert and contain liquid stool. Handling that stool safely is paramount to reducing environmental and healthcare worker exposure to infective bacteria like C. difficile and hazardous fecal waste. As the stool collects in the bag, it will likely produce odor as well. This why each Flexi-Seal™ PROTECT PLUS kit includes a solution to these concerns, Convatec Diamonds™ Gelling and Odor Control Sachets.
What are Diamonds™?
Convatec Diamonds™ are super absorbent gelling sachets that provide odor control. The gelling agent within Diamonds™ solidifies the stool in the collection bag reducing the risk of spilling or leaking during bag changes. Diamonds™ sachets also integrate the ActiveOne™ Odor Control system to reduce or eliminate odor. It is designed to absorb odor whether it is wet or dry.
How to use
Four Diamonds™ sachets are packaged and included in each Flexi-Seal™ PROTECT PLUS kit. The sachets must be added prior to coupling the collection bag to the catheter connector. This includes during initial device insertion or prior to replacing the collection bag during maintenance. There are just two steps to utilizing the Diamonds™ sachets:
- Remove the four Diamond Sachets from the zipped bag that is included in the kit.
- Place all four sachets into the empty collection bag – don’t tear open or add liquid to the bag.
That’s all! The liquid from the stool itself will activate the Diamonds™ sachets.
Best Practices
The output within the collection bag will appear darker than usual and/or may contain black flecks. This is a visible indication of the ActiveOne™ Odor Control system integrated into Diamonds™ sachets. Always assess the patient’s stool in the tubing of the device.
If a stool sample is required for laboratory testing, use contents in the catheter rather than the collection bag. To do so:
- Place and cinch the clamp included with your Flexi-Seal™ PROTECT PLUS distal to the stool sampling port and allow stool to collect in the tubing.
- Press the tip of a Luer-slip syringe or catheter syringe through the slit inside the sampling port. Withdraw the syringe plunger to collect the sample.
- Remove the syringe and close the sampling port.
Whether reducing the risk of exposure to contaminants from spillage or the exposure to malodor, Convatec Diamonds™ Gelling and Odor Control Sachets were designed to help you.
